Small Miracles

A small miracle happened at the San Clemente/Dana Point Shelter this month. There was no major announcement, no fanfare, no big banners or fireworks. Only a small handful of people knew when it occurred, but for those few it was a rewarding experience that had been a long time coming.

After 833 days of living at the shelter, Casper the Friendly Bunny was adopted.

Casper was a fairly young rabbit, about a year old, when he arrived at the shelter. He was spunky, as young rabbits tend to be, and a little shy around people, but he came to enjoy interacting with the rabbit volunteers and loved petting sessions in between romps around the exercise pen. Unfortunately, as time passed, he became more subdued while in his cage. People who came to visit the rabbits rarely gave Casper a second look, and when they did , it was usually to comment on his size. The rabbit volunteers were all saddened to watch such a wonderful rabbit slowly languish.

But one should never give up hope. This month someone finally recognized the hint of the special rabbit inside Casper's quiet exterior. Someone finally decided to give him a chance to show his true colors as a great house rabbit. They're lucky to have found such a gem of a rabbit, and Casper is lucky to have found a family to call his own!

Sadly, Casper was not alone. We have several rabbits, all wonderful and special in their own ways, that have been long-term residents of the shelter. We are hoping that someday a small miracle will occur for each one of them, and they'll be given a chance to grow and blossom into the excellent pets that we know they are.
